The Winterton Cup

Description

Cast copper alloy enamelled soldier's souvenir cup or pan. One side has sustained some damage, with the rim pushed inwards. The base is missing. The vessel is decorated with rows of enamelled squares of slightly varying sizes; the top row squares are bigger than the bottom row. Not all of the enamel survives; however a pattern can be identified: diagonal rows of alternating yellow, red, blue/purple and light blue or turquoise. The surface of the bowl is slightly worn. The vessel differs slightly to other examples like the Moorlands patera, ‘Rudge Cup‘ or ‘Amiens patera’ as it does not feature an inscription. However, the design of rows of squares found on this cup is a simplified version of the square design found on the Rudge Cup. The design representing the stretches of wall between the turrets of Hadrian's Wall.
