Appleby Wine Jug Handle
Description
A handle from a Roman wine jug or oenochoe. Made from copper alloy with some details picked out with silver wire inlay. The handle is T-shaped, and on the back, positioned as though looking into the jug, is an intricately moulded lion mask with a snarling open mouth. Details of the lion’s face have been picked out in silver wire. Running down the central ridge of the lion’s back, with its head on top of the lion’s head is a lizard-like creature, probably a salamander. At the base of the handle, the lion’s body terminates in a moulded lion’s paw, upon which rests the salamander’s tail.
