Silver-gilt Annular Brooch

Description

A small silver gilt annular brooch dating from the Medieval period. The hoop is lozenge (almost quartrefoil) shaped in plan, with concave sides and rounded beaded knops at the angles. Each of the lobes of the quatrefoil is expanded and oval shaped in plan, with concave mouldings along the sides of the frame connecting each lobe. This results in the creation of an octagonal aperture at the centre and an almost cross-like appearance for the brooch as a whole. The pin is also silver gilt, but more corroded, and hinges from the centre of one of the knops. The loop on the pin is beaded to match the knop, and the pin has a small collar and then tapers to a point. It is wide and flat. The reverse of the hoop is plain and flat.
