Buckle Tongue

Description

Tongue from a buckle. The tongue is cast and is D-shaped in section, curving towards the missing tip. At the other end, three incised grooves separate the tongue from a shield-shaped projection, on the reverse of which are the remains of the lug which would have attached the tongue to the buckle loop. This tongue derives from a type of early Anglo-Saxon buckle comprising a loop with a 'shield-tongue' attached, so-called because of the shield-shaped feature at the opposite end of the tongue to the tip.
