The Haxey Pendant

Description

A complete gold filigree disc pendant. The pendant comprises a circular sheet of gold with a plain wire edging. The upper surface is decorated with a central setting, now empty, made from an upright strip of gold surrounded by a collar of beaded wire. This forms the centrepiece of a cross design in filigree. The cross arms are formed by triangular fields marked out with beaded wire borders and filled with filigree annulets (left and right arms) and spirals or volutes (upper and lower arms). The upper and lower arms have an additional decorative feature in the form of a pair of curving projections, extending from the corners of the triangular fields and curving inwards towards the central setting. These projections are also filled with filigree annulets. All of the filigree is extensively worn. At the top of the pendant is a suspension loop made from a strip of grooved gold sheet, soldered to the back and rolling over to the front. An additional patch of gold has been applied transversely across the back of the pendant, possibly a repair to shore up the suspension loop. The back of the pendant is plain.
