Scabbard Chape

Description

Copper alloy scabbard chape with openwork decoration on one side, consisting of oval holes with a moulded pattern of interlaced strands between them. The other side is plain except for an incised border along one side. It has been identified as being of Kazakevicius type Ib1, dating to the 10th century. Iron remains within the chape were initially believed to be the tip of the sword, but after conservation work the iron was revealed to be curved in shape and is therefore more likely to be part of the chape itself.
