Finger Ring Fragment

Description

Silver finger ring fragment. The bezel is clasped by sloping shoulders, with the band tapering to a very thin form opposite the bezel. Incised and stamped decoration comprises an open cross-hatching defining a series of rhomboids flanked by triangular fields down the shoulders, with tiny [diameter c.0.5mm] punched rings filling both. Very crudely incised lettering on both long sides of the bezel. On one side it reads: I N and on the other A W. There may also be crudely inscribed letters within the flat base of the bezel, possibly reading VIVAT but rendered in the fewest possible strokes. If an inscription, these must post-date the loss of a stone. This latter ‘inscription’ might in fact arise from scratches inflicted while removing it.
