Silver Knife Pommel

Description

A sub-rectangular sheet metal cap for the handle of a small knife, probably of scale tang construction. The top is slightly concave and bears a medial incised line flanked by converging diagonal strokes. The opposed broad sides each bear an incised border limiting an area occupied by triangular and curved figures with closely-spaced lines running across them, perhaps veined leaves; the other sides are plain. The execution compares with that appearing on iconographic finger rings of early post-medieval date. One broad side was parted from the object by the time it was examined. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.
