Silver TOT Finger Ring

Silver finger ring with a cast flat band expanded to form a bezel inscribed with the seriffed letters TOT with a non-continuous border of paired incised strokes to either side, and above and below. A further pair of paired lines appears on either shoulder of the ring. The upper and lower borders of the central panel each have three short vertical strokes extending between the inner border element towards the inscription. A single short stroke extends from the inner borderline on either side. Research by Adam Daubney into the distribution of 'TOT rings' suggests it to be broadly coterminous with the suspected tribal territory of the Corieltauvi. The Celtic god Toutatis is referred to by the contracted inscription. This god was concerned with thunder and warfare, and it is presumed was held in particular regard by the wearers of these distinctive finger rings. The size of the ring suggests a male devotee.
