Pierced Gold Coin
Description
An Early-Medieval gold tremissis of the Merovingian ‘national' or 'mint-and-moneyer' series’ tremissis dating to c.AD 580-670, mint: Metz, moneyer: Ansolaldus. The coin is pierced with a probably drilled hole. The piercing of the coin may be intended to convert it to an amulet with the cross displayed, perhaps as a miniature and ready-made version of the pendants appearing in 7th-century ‘Final Phase’ furnished burials, which often present cruciform motifs.
