EMPEROR OTHO

Description

Oil painting on oak - Emperor Otho. In a contemporary Regency gilt frame. Old label of Otho 8. The painting will have been based on coinage with the portrait of Otho on them and the accounts of Othos's reign, primarily from Suetonious's Twelve Ceasars. It is part of a set of twelve emperor portraits of which only nine have been traced. Otho was born in 23 AD and became emperor of the Roman Empire in 69 AD, but for only 95 days. He was defeated in battle by his successor, Vitellius, and died by suicide.
