Linch Pin

Description

Linch pin made of iron, surmounted by a cast copper alloy head, which is crescentic and ribbed. In the centre of the crescent is a loop, which is shielded by a carefully modelled thumb. The thumb is perhaps an apotropaic or magical symbol, protecting the wheels and axles of the cart to which it was once attached.
